Brands and retailers can protect these early stages from fraud with machine learning that can detect behavior typical of a bot. Once seen, the merchant can introduce a step-up challenge—say, a simple captcha. That step will weed out bot-behavior without slowing down the purchase by referring the order to a human fraud review team.

Because the sneakers are so valuable to resellers and collectors, the bots designed to snag them are also in high demand. After months amassing all that human interaction data, the bot struck in July, successfully faking out Akamai’s software. “Sneaker bots have a really big community. They’re probably one of the more popular bot communities out there,” said Ali Mesdaq, director of digital risk engineering at cybersecurity company Proofpoint.

The other challenge I faced came from the retail websites that detected my bot. “I decided to make it as a joke, but I quickly realized just how powerful it could be,” Nate, the creator of Bird Bot, the open source tool for quickly purchasing Switches, told Motherboard in an online chat. Despite the technological advantages, he says even human shoppers can still beat bots. Without bots, some buyers say they’d never have a shot at some hard-to-get items.

The platform assigns a dedicated account manager to customize the negative review plan based on user preferences and objectives, focusing on a personalized experience. This was intended to throw a wrench into the store’s usual checkout procedure and make it difficult for anyone to automate the process. And it seemed to be working when the shoes went on sale in June; Bodega and Shopify didn’t see much bot activity. Many prominent botters run multiple types of bots for major releases, because each one has different strengths and weaknesses. Some botters rent dozens of computer servers in the same facilities as the retailers to save milliseconds on data latency.
